Born and raised in San Jose, California, The Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area has always been home for Dr. Vaughn. In high school and college, he travelled throughout the United States and several places around the world as an elite soccer player, representing the USA on numerous occasions. He played for several premier youth soccer clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, including serving as captain of the development team for the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks (now reclaiming the name of the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS). He also captained the United States Western Regional soccer team for 4 years as part of the Olympic Development Program and was a member of the USA National Team pool of players, training to play in both the Olympics and World Cup. His final years of competitive soccer were spent as the captain of the University of San Francisco Men’s Soccer team as a scholarship athlete. During this time he completed his pre-medical education with a major in Biology and a minor in Biochemistry and graduated with honors.
After completing a post-graduate year of research at UCSF, he entered medical school at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and graduated with honors and a distinction in research award. He then returned to the Bay Area to begin his Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at Stanford University. Following residency, he was selected to undergo fellowship subspecialty training in Sports Medicine at Stanford University. This afforded the opportunity to provide highly specialized care for numerous athletic teams and professional athletes from a wide range of team and individual sports. He was chosen to be one of the team physicians for the San Francisco 49ers, an assistant team physician with the NBA Golden State Warriors, and then would serve as the Cheif Medical Officer and Head Team Physician for the San Jose Earthquakes.
He has served on residency advisory boards, taught medical school courses, conducted medical and biomechanical research, developed new surgical techniques, authored chapters in medical textbooks, and given lectures and presentations at local and international conferences.
At the completion of his fellowship training, he was hired by Stanford University to establish a new Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine specialty clinic in Los Gatos, California. It is here that he has established his practice of caring for the active patient population. Dr. Vaughn’s background and training has put him in a unique position to care for patients at all levels of sporting interests: professional, competitive and recreational alike. However, he prides himself on treating all patients with the same professional care that he gives to elite athletes, with compassion and customized care to keep his patients healthy and active.
